The expectation on what you pay when you buy brand new really depends on what kind of functions the pool table has, its design, quality and how it plays. From 1938 to 1977, the magazine's title had changed to Bowlers Journal and Billiard Revue; at the time, these two sports industries were very similar and overlapping, and could be covered in the same periodical. If you tried to rotate the plug of such a lock without a key in the keyway, the top pin segment of each pin stack would block the plug at exactly the same number of degrees of rotation; each pin stack would contribute equally to preventing the plug from turning. Because there are two independent shear lines, there is no way to control, or even tell, at which shear line a given pin stack sets. See Figure 1. High-security locks often incorporate one or more secondary locking mechanisms beyond that provided by the conventional pin tumblers. Combinations involve potting two or more balls with a single shot. This shot requires precision and careful calculation of angles. A shot is legal if the cue ball makes contact with an object ball and a ball is potted, or if the cue ball hits an object ball directly. Cue sticks are used to strike the cue ball, imparting the desired spin and direction. Reset the lock by returning the plug to the vertical locked position and try again but with torque applied in the other direction. Apply light torque while pivoting a long, wavy rake inside the lock, inserting and removing it slightly as you go. While there is no guarantee that a submitted tournament report will be in the magazine, the editors do rely to some extent on reader submissions to get a sense of localized action.

Over time, accumulate a varied collection of practice locks, and study different lock designs whenever you get the opportunity. The lock will never pick open in this state; you must release torque and start over. Advanced players can perform trick shots that showcase their skill and control over the balls’ movement. While many of the principles of pin tumbler lock picking apply or can be adapted to other mechanical lock designs, a complete discussion of these locks and techniques for defeating them is beyond the scope of this document. Mechanical locks (and techniques for defeating them) are inherently interesting to many scientists, engineers, and others, and an understanding of the principles for evaluating and techniques for attacking locks, in addition to being useful in its own right, can provide subtle insight into security more generally. Pin-tumbler lock picking has long been among the common skills of the security community. The first step toward learning to defeat locks is a thorough understanding of how they work, where their security comes from, and how their design and manufacture introduces potentially exploitable vulnerabilities.
